Gardeners often rely on plastic labels that end up in landfills and use fertilisers that demand frequent reapplication and generate packaging waste, complicating sustainable care. Planttype streamlines both tasks by merging plant identification and nutrient delivery into a single plywood spike infused with a slow-release formula. This wood marker replaces plastic stakes and single-use fertilizer packets, delivering just the right amount of nourishment directly into the soil for a cleaner, more eco-friendly gardening experience. All wrapped up in seed paper packaging.

Our story

Our story

Our story

Hi, I’m Olly, and this is the story of Planttype's creation.

I've loved plants since childhood—my first two jobs were in gardens, and I've always dreamed of merging my passion for nature with my product design skills. Planttype was inspired during the annual “March for Men” charity walk in Bournemouth, an event I attend each year with my uncle Steve to support Prostate Cancer UK. While walking and talking, we came up with a rough idea for a stylish plant marker that could label a plant and also feed it.

At home, my girlfriend Robyn and I created real prototypes from that sketch. Planttype isn’t solely my idea; it emerged from numerous brainstorming sessions with friends, family, and fellow gardeners who provided insights, feedback, and encouragement, especially Ollie Tames. We’ve created a close community that infuses creativity and passion into every development step.

I’m so thankful to all who’ve supported this dream. Planttype represents sustainable innovation that helps both people and plants—and this is just the start.

Each time you water, direct a small amount of water at the marker as well as the plant. This extra moisture activates the nutrient infusion and helps it diffuse into the surrounding soil—especially important for indoor use.

Once the nutrient feed has run its course (around three months), you can:

Keep it as an ornament, or

Dispose of it responsibly by breaking it into small pieces and adding it to your garden’s green-waste or wood-chip compost stream

Testing Planttype

We wanted to see if our final product met its promise after getting near. Our first trial was growing chives with Planttype markers and without. Planttype signals accelerated plant growth. That's when we realised our product helped plant development as well as aesthetics. Slow nutrient release from the marker into the soil is another crucial characteristic of our system. We suspended four Planttype markers in distilled water and measured pH and EC every two days to test this. Two markers were pre-soaked in nutritional solution, while the other two were not. The pre-soaked markers showed a minor but detectable increase in pH and EC, indicating nutrient release and ongoing release. These testing proved Planttype is more than a garden ornament. It helps your garden “know its name” while nourishing your plants with a steady, regular supply of nutrients, illustrating that great design can be beautiful and useful. Our community collaborators help us test.

Q&A

Who are Planttype markers for?

Anyone who enjoys plants, whether they are cultivating a vegetable garden, caring for herbs on the windowsill, or adorning their home with houseplants.

How do they work?

Each wooden marker doubles as a slow-release nutrient marker. When you water over the marker, it gradually releases nutrients into the soil, providing a steady source of nourishment. This helps your plants thrive naturally while reducing the need for additional fertiliser.

How long do they last?

Approximately three months. After that, you can reuse them as ornamental labels or compost them appropriately.

Are they safe for the environment?

Plywood is one of the most sustainable wood materials, as it comes from fast-growing trees that are replanted after harvesting. Our packaging is designed to minimize impact — it’s made from seed paper that can be planted to grow wildflowers, and instead of plastic sticky dots, we use a homemade cornstarch solution. While we aren’t 100% sustainable yet, we are committed to continuous improvement. By reinvesting sales back into the business, we’re working towards making our products and processes as environmentally responsible as possible.
